Tomorrow is a big day, the girls are heading back to school, starting 2nd and 4th grade! I still can’t fathom that. Even though they met their teachers this morning, the night before the first day always comes with a mix of emotions. There’s excitement for new adventures, a little nervousness about what’s ahead, and lots of questions about new teachers, friends (specifically who’s in my class), and routines.

Starting a new school year is more than just getting new supplies and outfits, it’s a big transition for kids. For some, it’s thrilling; for others, it can be overwhelming. Even children who love school might feel a little anxious about changes in teachers, classmates, schedules, or expectations. I’ve compiled a few ways I have used to help during this time of year between summer ending and school beginning.
Here are a few ways to help your kids feel confident and ready for the new year:
- Talk About It-Let them share what they’re excited or worried about. Listening without immediately trying to “fix” their concerns can help them feel heard.
- Practice Routines Early-A smooth morning can set the tone for the whole day. Practice wake-up times, breakfast, and getting ready so the first day feels familiar.
- Highlight the Positives-Remind them about the friends they’ll see, fun projects ahead, and new things they’ll get to learn.
- Prepare Together-Packing backpacks, picking the first-day outfit, and laying everything out the night before can ease first-day jitters.
- Reassure Them-Remind them that it’s normal to feel nervous, and those feelings usually fade as they settle in.
As a parent, I can’t help but feel proud watching them grow into these next stages. Each school year brings fresh opportunities for them to learn, discover passions, and build resilience. While I’ll miss the extra time with them over summer and the fun things we did, I’m excited to see all the ways they’ll shine in the months ahead.
Here’s to a great start to 2nd and 4th grade for my two girls and to all the kids heading back tomorrow. May this school year be full of learning, laughter, and growth.
