Camping with children can be equal parts magical and messy, but that’s exactly what makes it unforgettable. Fresh air, wide-open spaces, and the joy of unplugging from screens for a bit create the perfect backdrop for building family memories. With the right mindset and preparation, camping with kids can be less about surviving the trip and more about savoring every moment. Coming from an Eagle Scout, camping is second nature.

This weekend, the girls and I will be camping somewhere new. Brialee Campground in Ashford, CT. We have never been here before but expect a review post later.

1. Plan for Comfort, Not Just Adventure

While you might be fine with “roughing it,” younger campers often need a few extra comforts. Bring cozy sleeping bags, favorite blankets, and even a small stuffed animal. A good night’s sleep can make the difference between cranky campers and happy explorers. A little-known tip, pack a portable noise machine.

2. Keep the Schedule Flexible

Kids thrive on routine, but nature doesn’t always follow a timetable. Plan a loose itinerary, maybe a short hike in the morning, an afternoon by the lake, but be ready to switch things up. Sometimes the best memories come from unplanned moments, like skipping the hike to watch a family of deer wander past your campsite.

3. Make Them Part of the Setup

Kids love being part of the action. Let them help set up the tent, unpack sleeping bags, or gather kindling for the fire. Giving them ownership of the campsite helps them feel invested and proud.  I give my kids a list of what they need to pack.  Once at the campsite they know the routine of needing to help me get things set up and unloaded. This includes getting their sleeping area ready.

4. Pack More Snacks Than You Think You Need

Between running, climbing, and exploring, kids burn through energy fast. Stock up on easy, portable snacks like trail mix, granola bars, and fruit. And don’t forget the s’mores supplies because camping without them is practically a crime.

6. Prepare for Mess — and Embrace It

Kids will get dirty. Clothes will get wet. Hair will get tangled. Instead of fighting it, lean into it. Bring a “camping clothes” bag and let them explore without worrying about keeping clean. The dirt washes off, but the memories last.

7. End Each Day with a Little Magic

Whether it’s a bedtime story under the stars, a campfire sing-along, or a quiet moment watching the sunset, end the day with a ritual your kids will remember. It’s often these small, shared moments that become the heart of the trip.

Final Thought:
Camping with kids isn’t about perfection, it’s about connection. The laughter, the stargazing, the burnt marshmallows, and even the occasional meltdown are all part of the story you’ll tell for years to come. So, pack your gear, grab your little adventurers, and head out into the wild. Your next great family memory is waiting.
